FAQ:
Q. Is Club WIP a competition?
A. No! It’s all about chatting about the creative process and learning from each other : )
Q. What does ‘WIP’ stand for?
A. Work in Progress : )
Q. Do I have to submit a full track?
A. Nope. Make whatever you feel like. If you want to submit a one-hit sound or loop, that’s fine!
Q. How will it work on the night?
A. As a group, we’ll listen to each track one-by-one in a random order. After each track finishes, we’ll invite it’s creator to mention a few things about how they made it (this is optional and you are not required to speak).
Q. I can’t make the event but would like to participate. Can I still submit something?
A. Yes! A Soundcloud link will be sent round to participants after to listen back : )
Q. Can I bring my submission on a USB stick on the day?
A. Yes!
Q. I don’t make music but I’d like to come and hear tunes my friends have made, can I still come along?
A. Yes! The more the merrier : )
Q. Where can I listen to previous examples of Club WIP?
A. Check out previous event playlists on our Soundcloud : )
Q. For the ‘Single-Sample Challenge’; can I pitch the sound across my midi keyboard and ‘play it’ like an instrument?
A. Yes!
Q. What about adding my synthesizer / guitar / trumpet / voice?
A. No. For the ‘Single-Sample Challenge’, no other sounds may be added to the source material.
Q. What about using a sampler?
A. Yes! You can place the sample in your sampler and manipulate it in any way you want. Bend it, shift it, bop it.
Q. But won’t I eventually end up with a sound that’s so far from the original that it’s basically synthesis?
A. Yes (and no). We have found that warping original sounds often lends itself to creating a more unique and unpredictable sound than if you were to start with a synth sound for example.
Q. What about granular synthesis?
A. We’ll leave that one up to you : )
Q. How the hell can I make a drum beat out of this sample?
A. Experiment! Try using distortion, EQ, compression, pitch shifting, and mashing stuff. Bounce it, mangle it, then bounce it again. Mangle THAT and keep going until you find something that resembles drums (if that’s what you’re going for!).
